Floyd Mayweather is expected to sign his contract for the May 1 bout against Shane Mosley on Monday, FanHouse has learned. The deal, which will cement their welterweight (147 pounds) clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is likely to be officially announced Monday or some time this week.
The 32-year-old Mayweather is a five-time champion with a spotless record of 40-0, 25 knockouts, and the 38-year-old Mosley is the WBC welterweight super champion with a mark of 46-5 and 39 KOs.
Reached on Monday in his office, Golden Boy Promotisons' CEO, Richard Schaefer, confirmed that Mayweather was slated to sign his contract.
"That's what I'm told, I haven't seen it yet. But we'll see," said Schaefer, whose company is handling negotiations for Mosley. "I haven't seen [Mayweather's] signature yet, but I'm told that he will sign."
Mayweather and Mosley already had agreed to the deal points, with Mosley signing for the bout to happen on Friday after a meeting with his attorney, Judd Burstein, in Las Vegas.
Among the points agreed to by both fighters is Olympic-style, random blood-testing and urinalysis for steroid and illegal drug detection, and an immediate rematch for Mayweather in the event he loses.
"We have February, March and April, so we have plenty of time and an ideal amount of time to implement our marketing strategies, so from that point of view, it's okay," said Schaefer. "But we do want to get going, start working on the marketing concept and the marketing plan, and the press tours and so on, so it's important that we get it done."
Mayweather is coming off of September's unanimous decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez. When the fighters enter the ring, Mosley will be ending a nearly 14-month layoff since a Jan. 24, 2009, ninth-round knockout victory over Antonio Margarito.
