A TIMELY ACTION
Ogdensburg, NY- Once in a while someone happens to be in just the right place, at just the right time, to cause something to happen that becomes a landmark event. Such is the case with Floyd Mayweather Jr., at this juncture of his boxing career. With his ability to draw a crowd when he steps into the boxing arena, because of his pugilistic abilities, as well as his prowess with his vocal cords, Mr. Mayweather can be very selective as to any opponent he cares to be associated with.
IT IS “THE EVENT”
In the recent past boxing fans were thought to be fortunate enough to witness Floyd in action against another master of the art, Manny Pacquiao, in what was being touted as the match of the decade for some, and longer periods of time for others. This was to be THE event. Then it all fell through. Because of the prevalence of drug usage within all sports in recent years, Floyd Mayweather Jr. insisted that both Pacquiao and himself be subjected to Olympic-style random blood sampling and drug testing. Floyd was asking for nothing more than for the playing field to be proven even for each boxer. That is certainly not too much to ask for.
MANNY PACQUIAO AFRAID?
Mr. Pacquiao refused to step up to the plate. He refused to submit to random blood sampling and testing in an attempt to eliminate the possibility of the use of performance enhancing drugs. With that revelation “Money” Mayweather refused to sign a contract to fight the aforementioned Manny Pacquiao. Each fighter, for separate reasons, was backing away from what was considered to be the most lucrative fight purse of all time.
SHANE NOT AFRAID OF FLO
A month later it has been announced that Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. and “Sugar” Shane Mosley will meet in the ring, touch gloves, and in the words of the old master referee Mills Lane, “get it on.” In this case both boxers are apparently ready and willing to do random blood collection and testing to prove abstinence from any sort of drug usage that has a known test procedure available. This, to the best of my knowledge, is the first such so tested match in history, and it is being prompted, at least mainly, by the efforts of just one person, Mr. Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
FLOYD TO BE COMMENDED!
Fans may take issue with the fact Floyd Mayweather has no problem with voicing his opinion of how good he is at his profession, or with his recent past selection of ring opponents, but I see no way they can argue with his campaign of forced testing for illegal drug usage. It is far-sighted, unprecedented, a difficult position for any individual to be in, yet he is in the vanguard of a movement that should have been instituted by promoters, sanctioning bodies, and state boxing commissions long ago. This can be nothing but for the good of boxing, and Floyd Mayweather is bringing it about almost single-handedly.
